Adoption update

Hey friends and family, we were handed some disappointing news this week that the birth mom for the twins had decided to go with another family. It was heartbreaking for us to receive this news, but as often happens God does not close a door without opening a window. We received a call this morning for another situation in Sioux City Iowa. A two year old girl (she turned two on Easter) who is currently in foster care and the parents rights have been terminated. There are seven (yes, seven!) families being presented to the case worker for this baby. At the end of the day this baby needs a good home. We are praying that we are the home for her. So here's where we are today. We met with the home study social worker tonight for a two hour interview on our life, history, how we plan to raise our child, discipline, set goals and where we come from. It was a long meeting but the social worker was great (Highly recommend DKM home studies in Sioux Falls) - Mary was easy to talk to and put us at ease. Even the doggies behaved! I will continue to share updates to our process, but wanted to send out a thank you for those that have supported and listened and prayed for us! Please continue to pray if not for us then for this little girl as she has already been through so much.

If you'd still like to help us reach our campaign goal you can donate as much or little as you want. Check it out: http://naf.fundly.com/the-degroot-adoption-journey

We love you all and want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you've done and continue to do!

More Info

Several years ago we began the journey of starting our family.  With the strength of our love and the support and encouragement of our family we tried earnestly to get pregnant.  As the months and years passed with unsuccessful attempts through natural means we decided to try fertility treatments.  There were many attempts but each one lead to disappointment, and some of them ended in surgery (3 to be exact).  Science clearly was not on our side.  Over the years we have been hopeful, crossed our fingers, held our breath, said prayers and sadly cried over many disappointments.  The journey has been long and stressful but we are not willing to give up.  Adoption has been a thought of ours for years but something we always kept in the back of our minds as we tried naturally to have our own child.  So what do we now?  Adopt.

The process began last October with a private attorney and a home study.  Imagine our surprise when about 4 months into our process our attorney called us and told us of a child needing a home and we were the family of choice.  Our hearts beat fast, our heads started spinning, we were grinning from ear to ear (seriously, the funniest happy dances you've ever seen!) we felt LUCKY!  We'd always talked about what that day would feel like, and when the moment happened it was exactly as we'd imagined it would be.   The attorney, doing a great job of telling us all the details and having to repeat herself several times over our incessant laughter told us of a baby boy and then she drops the bomb.  The cost to pursue this is $40,000.  WHAT?!?!  It was like the wind was knocked out of us, and the dream that suddenly seemed so close had been pushed out, yet again.  We thanked her for the call and hung up the phone... and cried.  A week later, it happened again, another opportunity, but considerably less cost, only $30,000 (really?!).  More disappointment and more tears.  Fast forward to today - last night to be exact; Friday March 21st - we received "the call" again... we reluctantly picked up the phone, spoke with our attorney and were told a women is expecting twins by the end of May and the attorney wants our permission to present our profile to the birth mom.  The total cost of this adoption will be approximately $18,000 if she selects us.  A considerably less amount but still a significant financial burden.

As every journey has its hills and valleys we have decided to pursue this, only this time there will be no disappointment.  Our journey will be a success the day we are able to bring a child into our home.  So, we are going to pursue this with gusto and literally turn over every rock so we do not have to walk away from another opportunity again.  Here's the plan - we are going to apply for grants, sell a car, have a rummage sale, and (this is the hardest part) ask for your help.   Over the years we have appreciated your words of encouragement, they have motivated us to keep trying and to persevere.  You've been with us through the up's and down's and have listened to our story.  We have longed for this dream for so long and pray that if you are able to, you will help us see it through.  We will continue to post updates on our progress and ask that any amount you are willing to give you donate through this site.  All donations will go directly to the adoption fees through our attorney.

Family and Friends, Thank You for considering us in your decision, keeping us in your prayers and listening to our story.
